Position Summary MAC is accepting applications for the Operating Engineer Trainee position. The Operating Engineer Trainee performs job duties under the supervision of a First Class A Engineer or Chief A Engineer until the trainee has progressed toward and obtained a First Class A Engineer license. Job duties include, but are not limited to, troubleshooting, constructing, and maintaining plant equipment (turbines, boiler, pumps, compressors, cooling towers, etc.). Trainees operate, inspect, repair and perform general maintenance on numerous heating and air-conditioning systems, ventilation equipment involving computerized building automation systems and other related mechanical equipment. Equipment operation and repair includes high/low pressure boilers (steam or hydronic), steam turbines, and chillers located at the MSP International Airport and related campus buildings. MAC's state of the art Energy Management Center (EMC) uses computerized building automation systems, fosters a positive team environment, and includes a competitive compensation and benefits package. Eligible applicants will meet all minimum requirements for this position. Individuals with a State of MN First Class A Engineer license or above are not eligible for the trainee program and are invited to apply for the Operating Engineer position when it becomes available. Operating Engineer Trainees are required to make steady progress toward attaining the State of Minnesota First Class A Engineer license. Information regarding to this licensure can be obtained from the State of Minnesota website: *********************************************** Trainees who successfully complete the trainee program and pass the licensure examination as outlined by the State of Minnesota for First Class A Engineer will be eligible for an Operating Engineer position. Hourly Rate The 2019 hourly rate for the Operating Engineer Trainee is $27.685. The hourly rate indicated is 80% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly rate as covered by the collective bargaining unit agreement between the MAC and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 70. Trainees may receive a 5% increase every six months up to 95% of the First Class A Operating Engineer hourly rate until they have obtained their First Class A Operating Engineer Licensure. Schedule/Shifts The trainee position is generally scheduled Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The schedule and/or shift may be adjusted for training or other purposes. Anticipated Interview Date Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, December 5th for selected applicants. Position Description Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or Operating Engineer, Operating Engineer Trainees will be expected to perform the following job duties: Boiler Operation Operate and maintain high and low pressure steam and hot water boilers Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative maintenance on boilers, safety equipment and other equipment Prepare boilers for inspections Change boilers to alternative fuels, oil & jet fuel from natural gas Control operation and adjustment of water softeners, feed water systems, fuel oil, jet fuel pumps, etc. Perform chemical analysis of boiler water, test and treat condensate return, and accurately prepare reports Observe related boiler equipment; makes necessary adjustments and repairs Perform emergency repairs to boilers or related equipment as directed Order and receive deliveries of oil and jet fuelTurbine Operation Operate high pressure steam turbines Conduct routine inspections and perform preventative and corrective maintenance on steam power turbines Start up, synchronize, shut down, and adjust turbinesChiller Operation Operate chiller compressors (reciprocating and centrifugal), cooling towers and related equipment Start up, shut down, inspect, and perform preventative maintenance on cooling towers systems, pumps, valves, etc Perform chemical analysis of chiller loop water and condenser water, treat and accurately prepare reportsBuilding Automation Regularly scan heating and cooling systems; troubleshoot electronic and pneumatic control centers; make adjustments to maintain proper climate controls Control ventilating equipment in vehicle tunnels Respond to alarms, identify malfunctions or abnormal operation of equipment and facilities; make necessary adjustments or emergency repairs and inform proper authoritiesBuilding Maintenance Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC units Maintain, repair and troubleshoot heating and cooling systems Perform emergency assistance with vendors during equipment or other energy management failures affecting terminal operation Appropriately apply lock-out/tag-out and other safety proceduresMiscellaneous Duties Maintain safe and clean facilities Read charts, gauges, levels and temperatures for all systems; accurately document data as required Maintain daily log on equipment performance and plant activities Operate computerized preventative maintenance program Complete other duties as assigned Position Requirements MAC Core Competencies Complete work assignments in an accurate and neat manner Produce required volume of work within assigned deadlines Consistently practice cooperative, positive and flexible work habits and accept accountability for job responsibilities Use sound, ethical judgment in solving problems and making decisions Use effective interpersonal skills to develop positive work relationships Perform work in a safe, secure and ethical manner Use good communication skills between work groups Comply with required work schedules Provide good internal/external customer service Comply with all MAC policies and procedures Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Two years of skilled mechanical and/or facilities maintenance experience including mechanical HVAC, steam or hot water boilers and chemical control testing OR enrollment in, or completion of, an HVAC training program Good mathematical aptitude Valid State of Minnesota "Special" Boiler Operator license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date Valid state-issued driver's license Ability to work within small and confined spaces and from ladder/lifts at varying heights Ability to lift, position and pull up to 50 pounds Clear and articulate written and oral communication skills Basic skill level in word processing and email computer functions Willing to respond to emergency calls seven days a week on a twenty-four hour basis Ability to obtain and maintain MAC required licenses and certifications Desirable Qualifications Experience in HVAC operations State of Minnesota Boiler License (below First Class A Engineer) Experience in maintenance and repairs including boilers, chillers, air handling systems, piping systems, pumps, air conditioning/refrigeration systems, emergency generators and/or building/equipment electrical systems Valid State of Minnesota Universal Refrigeration Certificate Experience using BAS and CMMS computer systems or other facilities maintenance systems Metropolitan Airports Commission - Just posted report job - original job
