POSITION SUMMARY :

Perform chemical and physical testing on raw materials, in-process and encapsulated finished products to determine adherence to prescribed specifications. Prepare laboratory reagents and clean analytical glassware. Maintain accurate record of all analyses performed, documenting test results on laboratory worksheets and/or electronically as required by GLP/GMP. Apply error recognition and precision analysis to assure accuracy of test results. Keeps work area and equipment safe, clean and in good working order. Order and maintain the necessary chemicals and supplies to ensure efficient operation of the QC laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Analyze incoming raw materials, comparing results with supplier's CoA to ascertain conformance against Balchem's purchase specifications; issue the appropriate labels to material handlers that reflect the QC status of material (approved, quarantined, or rejected); transfer the PSD data into e-files

Analyze WIPs materials for release and every fifth sample for activity and particle size using acid - base or redox titrations, particle size analyzers, gravimetric analysis, color comparison, etc.; record all results in laboratory e-notebook following the appropriate SOPs; notify appropriate plant personnel of any WIP material failing to meet specification OR testing outside its prescribed action limits/target values

Analyze finished products for activity, release and particle size distribution recording results on QC worksheets; compare analytical results against specifications; for material meeting specification, enter results into Chempax, print a CoA and verify its accuracy and e-transfer the lot to shipping

Record, report, and investigate/verify all suspected non-conforming materials results (OOS) to a supervisor in a timely manner; in addition, notify appropriate plant personnel of any material suspected of failing to meet specifications and issue the appropriate placarding to prevent accidental shipment of the lot; once an OOS is confirmed, e-transfer the material to reject

Participates in the environmental monitoring program by swabbing the food contact surfaces of cleaned equipment for microbial analysis

Maintain the retain sample database; ensure boxes are labeled appropriately

File raw material and finished product worksheets; at year's end, archive old files and set-up new file folders

Possess the technical expertise to operate the following instruments including, but not limited to: balances, auto titrators, pH and conductivity meters, refractometers, UV spectrometers, and Sieves

Prepare and standardize laboratory reagents according to written procedures; discard all reagents past their expiration date

Ensure that all analytical glassware is clean and defect-free and that all equipment is within calibration and deemed suitable for use

Perform and record daily/weekly QC checks to ensure that equipment is operating correctly to ensure the accuracy and reproducibility of data being reported from the QC laboratory

Perform routine calibration and maintenance on equipment; assist in troubleshooting problems

Perform support activities associated with the qualification of new or alternate material suppliers

Participate in validating/verifying new test methods

Ensure that the daily work practices in the laboratory and stock room are safe and consistent with site policies including the Chemical Hygiene Plan; follows all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards

Weekly for each shift, verify the operability and sensitivity of the metal detectors used by production

Dispose of all laboratory waste as directed; adhere to all policies on handling hazardous waste

Support efforts regarding continuous improvement by being an active participant on various site teams and initiatives

REQUIREMENTS:

AAS degree in chemistry with a minimum of one year of experience in analytical chemistry, and at least three years of experience in an analytical laboratory or related process laboratory

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Lab work involves standing, walking, and repetitive motion with occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

Operates various laboratory equipment such as burettes, balances and microscopes etc.

Works inside a laboratory, subject to fumes, odors, gases; MSDS describes hazardous materials
