--- Bachelor's degree plus 10 years of experience in the field of laboratory animal care working in USDA-regulated, AAALAC-accredited animal facilities --- Background in training/education --- Working knowledge of federal laws, regulations, and procedures pertaining to the care and use of research animals, as well as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals --- Excellent communication and leadership skills --- Experience working with teams
-- Preferred Qualifications: --- Documented success in developing and implementing training programs --- Experience, and preferably past membership, with an IACUC --- LATG and/or CMAR certification --- CPTM--- or other professional training certification About the Job

  • Supervise, mentor and coach a team of husbandry and technical trainers (3-6) to ensure appropriate training of internal and external stakeholders while ensuring consistency between areas in adherence to Departmental guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Direct the RAR trainers, who provide "hands on" training in basic study support techniques in all research species
  • Establish and maintain a list of subject matter experts (SMEs) to supplement the RAR trainers in filling training needs
  • Monitor employees' performance and provide timely feedback when performance does not meet expectations
  • Lead Training team meetings and provide guidance and feedback when necessary 2. Teaching/Training (20%)
    • Assist in creating and/or offer lectures, labs, and seminars for veterinary students, animal care staff, veterinary technicians, area supervisors, and research staff and/or faculty
    • Research, write, and/or amend reference documents for direct use in teaching researchers, students, RAR employees, or other individuals associated with the University
    • Identify training that can be standardized across the RAR sites to improve staff skills and/or quality of the work performed
    • Assess training programs to ensure that they contain the appropriate level of content for personnel
    • Collaborate with the Training Coordinator and RAR Trainers to continuously monitor and assess the effectiveness of the RAR Training Program based on colleague feedback, current regulatory requirements, technological advancements, and evolving research needs
    • Collaborate with area supervisors and other stakeholders to address gaps in departmental training, developing new training modules or identifying outside training resources to fill these gaps, as appropriate
    • Act as a resource for University personnel on issues relating to the training requirements for those using animals in research 3. Programmatic support (20%)
      • Provide strategic oversight for the development, implementation, monitoring, and quality of RAR training program
      • Provide input and assist in creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Guidelines or Policies relevant to the care and use of animals and personnel training
      • Work with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and staff regarding RAR training and business processes
      • Serve on committees and attend interdepartmental meetings as the RAR representative to share information and advocate for the Department
      • Contribute to operational excellence by the collation of metrics showing the efficient delivery of training to colleagues involved in animal care and research
      • Work closely with the SLT to enhance the visibility of the RAR training program
      • Work with the University Occupational Health and Safety team to ensure all ROHP requirements are completed for RAR and research staff
      • Assist in preparation of the Program Description for site visits by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) 4. Regulatory Compliance (15%)
        • Participate in review of research protocols through participation on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
        • Perform inspections of University animal facilities and laboratories, and participate in semi-annual program reviews as a member of the IACUC
        • Ensure compliance with all animal welfare regulations in training and documentation including SOP and policy creation and review
        • Assist in providing requested information during regulatory inspections 5. Customer Service (10%)
          • Assist Investigators and research personnel on developing technical skills necessary to complete their research protocols
          • Connect researchers with the resources needed to fulfill their study objectives
          • Respond to requests for training services in a timely manner
          • Coordinate and assist with resolution related to service and billing disputes involving training services 6. Other Duties As Assigned (5%) About the Department Research Animal Resource (RAR) is under the Office of the Vice President for Research. RAR's primary focus is on the service and administration of the animal care and use program at the University of Minnesota. The Training and Compliance Lead are part of a staff of over 150 employees including Academic and Professional Staff, Civil Service, Union Represented and Student Employees. RAR has a daily census of more than 24,000 rodent cages in 20 buildings split into 7 geographic teams between the Minneapolis and St. Paul Campus. How To Apply Applications must be submitted online.
