Job Description:
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is the world's largest
association of neurologists with more than 36,000 members and

Operating from its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a
six-person public policy office in Washington D.C, the AAN is the
parent 501c6 organization that operates the American Academy of
Neurology Institute (AANI), a 501c3 research, education and events
subsidiary. Annual revenues are approximately $60MM (38% from
royalties and publishing of eight publications, 25% from
conferences and education, 16% from membership dues, 15% from
grants and gifts, and 6% from other sources including business
support services for two related nonprofits - the American Brain
Foundation (ABF) and the United Council of Neurological
Subspecialties (UCNS).

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Direct Reports: Health Policy Teams, including: Quality
Improvement, Advocacy, Policy & Practice
Location: Minneapolis, MN, or Washington, DC
Travel: Approximately 30%. Ability to legally travel outside of the
United States, particularly but not limited to Canada
Position Summary:
As a member of the Executive Team, the Chief Health Policy Officer
provides effective leadership and strategic oversight for the
health policy division and guidance for associated governance
committees, overseeing products, programs, and services that
improve the quality of care delivered by neurologists and others on
the medical team, optimizing practice and business operations, and
delivering effective advocacy on behalf of AAN members and their
patients.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy:
o Accountable for establishing vision and implementation of health
policy committee and staff structure in consultation with the AAN
President and CEO
o Accountable for federal, state, and regulatory advocacy
initiatives including action plans and engagement activities
o Leads the development of strategic and operational plans within
the health policy division
o Serves as the primary liaison to the Officers and Board of the
AAN relating to health policy activities
o Ensures coordination between Health Policy and other divisions
and across committees
o Develops and enhances positive relationships, networking and
coalition building efforts between the AAN and other groups and
associations with related interests such as neurology-related
consumer/patient groups and organizations, other medical societies,
the American Medical Association, and federal health-related
agencies
o Ensures competent staff support for Quality, Advocacy, and
Medical Economics and Practice Committees
Quality and Guidelines
o Accountable for the development and dissemination of clinical
practice guidelines, quality measures, Axon Registry, and related
tools and products
o Ensures synergistic collaboration among all quality improvement
initiatives
o Oversees registry operations and maintains positive relationships
with external vendors
Medical Economics and Practice
o Guides the practice and medical economic activities to ensure
favorable environments for members to practice
o Oversees efforts to build relationships and communication
channels with health plans and payers
o Stays abreast of ever-changing health care practice and
regulatory environments
Advocacy
o Accountable for strategies and tactics related to state and
federal legislative advocacy and regulatory issues
o Ensures appropriate BrainPAC operations and support for effective
implementation of strategic goals
o Guides programs to develop, cultivate, and maintain effective
advocacy among members through programs such as Neurology on the
Hill and the Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Program
Team Leadership
o Position is responsible for direct employee supervision which
includes the selection, training, performance management,
compensation administration, and termination of employees
o Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
that values learning and a commitment to quality
o Establishes and monitors staff performance, development of goals,
assignment of accountabilities, setting of objectives, and
establishment of priorities
o Oversees and monitors health policy activities of AAN's
Minneapolis and Washington, DC, offices
o Accountable for development and implementation of division
budget
