Residency Purpose The PGY-2 Internal Medicine residency program at Hennepin Healthcare builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY-2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY-2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. Program Vision This PGY-2 Internal Medicine Residency is a 12-month specialized training program designed to advance inpatient and ambulatory care clinical skills used in the pharmacotherapeutic management of the internal medicine patient. Emphasis will be placed on transitions of care by providing direct patient care experiences in both the inpatient and outpatient practice settings. Residents will participate in internal medicine rounds and serve as a vital member of an interdisciplinary care team. Graduates of this program will be skilled practitioners prepared to practice in an inpatient clinical or ambulatory care practice setting. Required Learning Experiences

  • *Internal Medicine (18 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine I – General Medicine emphasis (6 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine II – Hospitalist emphasis (6 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine III – Cardiology emphasis w/precepting (6 weeks)
  • Ambulatory Clinic Primary Care (4 weeks)
  • Internal Medicine/Pain/Geriatrics Clinic
  • Infectious Disease (3 weeks)
  • Cardiology Consults (3 weeks)
  • Management (Longitudinal) *Combined inpatient internal medicine and ambulatory care rotation. Residents alternate rotation weeks between inpatient medicine and Coordinated Care clinic. Emphasis is placed on transitions of care and patient care continuity through discharge counseling and MTM follow-up post-discharge. Elective Learning Experiences
    • Burn (3 weeks)
    • Oncology (4 weeks)
    • Pediatrics (3 weeks)
    • Psychiatry (3 weeks)
    • Nephrology (4 weeks)
    • Medical ICU (4 weeks)
    • Family Medicine (4 weeks)
    • Evening Medicine (3 weeks)
    • Positive Care/GI Liver (4 weeks)
    • Solid Organ Transplant (4 weeks) Service Requirement Residents will contribute to departmental staffing:
      • Residents staff every third weekend during the residency year
      • Weekend coverage experience will focus on decentral clinical staffing
      • Residents staff two holidays throughout the residency year On-call duties:
        • Residents are designated to cover the clinical on-call pager
        • On-call/off-premise for seven consecutive evenings per designated call period Residency Requirements & Opportunities Residents will contribute to departmental teaching, management, and leadership activities:
          • Precept/teach Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) students and PGY1 residents on Internal Medicine rotations
          • Active participation in a hospital or ambulatory committee
          • Educate healthcare professionals through in-service lecture and/or small group discussion Residency Project Requirements Residents will complete a longitudinal research project relating to internal medicine that is suitable for publication. Research activities include:
            • Medication Use Evaluation
            • Submission of completed project in written form is required
            • Presentation of results at appropriate hospital committee
              • Longitudinal Research Project
              • Submission of completed project in written manuscript format is required
              • Presentation of results to an appropriate audience within the organization or regional/national conference Regional and National Conference Attendance Residents receive a stipend to attend and participate in the following regional and national conferences:
                • University Health Consortium Meeting
                • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Meeting
                • Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference The resident receives individual health insurance, paid time off, research project time and a professional travel reimbursement stipend. Pharmacy degree from an ACPE Accredited College of Pharmacy, successful completion of an ASHP Accredited PGY-1 Residency Program, and eligibility for Minnesota Licensure are required.
