Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, are seeking a professional to join our team as a full-time Director of Finance.

Responsible for the financial accounting and reporting functions for the Franciscan Sisters of
Little Falls. Responsible for accounting and statistical records, coordination of a formal budget and forecasting program, financial planning and control, risk management and insurance. Serves as liaison between investment managers and Leadership.

Bachelor's degree in accounting required. Eight (8) years' experience in accounting or finance position, five (5) years of supervisor/management experience, audit and non-profit experience required. Prefer to have or had CMA (Certified Managerial Accountant) or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation. Previous experience with operations of a Catholic religious order preferred. Must maintain strict confidentiality. Experience in the areas outlined in the job description.

  • Description of Role

    Responsible for the financial accounting and reporting functions for the Franciscan Sisters of
    Little Falls. Responsible for accounting and statistical records, coordination of a formal budget and forecasting program, financial planning and control, risk management and insurance. Serves as liaison between investment managers and Leadership.


  • Major and Minor Tasks


  • Knows and demonstrates the Franciscan Values of Respect, Open Communication, Hospitality and Compassion, while performing all job functions. Demonstrates values with other staff, volunteers, clients, and visitors.
  • Upholds and fulfills mission and philosophy of Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls in all areas of communications and public relations, whether written, spoken or observed.
  • Insures that all financial transactions as directed and approved by the Community Leadership Team via formal resolution or inclusion in Leadership minutes are properly executed and recorded.
  • Supervises, according to the general policies of the Community Leadership Team, the administration of the Congregation's funds, investments, debt, and insurance.
  • Regularly informs the Treasurer on the status of the finance department operation and any issues.
  • Acts as a resource person for Community Leadership Team and other services on matters relating to temporal administration.
  • Confers with Operations Coordinator in matters relating to Motherhouse properties and responsibilities, including buildings and space renovations, any new construction or major building or equipment repairs, as requested.
  • Recommends financial policies to Community Leadership Team and secures approvals as appropriate.
  • Assists Operations Coordinator with negotiating contracts with outside agencies regarding rental of space.
  • Confers with legal counsel on matters of liability, insurance, fraud, protocols and procedures, review of contracts, property and real estate issues including tax exemption factors involved, and any other matters where legal advice is warranted.
  • Reviews and assists Sisters and employers with employment contracts and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Cooperates with and assists local houses and individual sisters in financial matters.
  • Oversees record retention and filing system for the department. Oversees safekeeping of pertinent real estate/property related documents/financial records of Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls and related corporations applying appropriate record retention policies.
  • Oversees investments, coordinates reporting, monitor's allocations, and reviews investments, according to the Guidelines in conjunction with the Financial Advisory Committee.
  • Monitors monthly investment reports. Maintains relationships with investment managers, custodial bank contact and consultant. Consults with investment managers, custodial bank, and performance analyst, as necessary.
  • Administers the patrimony and dowries of the sisters. Works with the investment bank on recommendations and investment purchases and sales. Monitors interest and dividends receipt and investment returns.
  • Responsible for procurement & maintenance of adequate insurance coverages for sisters and corporate assets and liabilities. Reviews insurance policies for adequate coverage based on changes in the organization and/or its membership. Prepares and submits all information for insurance renewals.
  • Reviews and advises regarding annual budget preparation, major expense, and capital expenditure items. Approves contingency capital expenditure requests. Prepares presentation of final budget to Treasurer, Financial Advisory Committee and Community Board for approval. Makes recommendations on improvement of overall financial position of organization.
  • Chairs the Financial Advisory Committee; formulates agendas and reviews same with Treasurer. Arranges for and participates in performance reviews of investments.
  • Prepares annual financial report to the Community. Prepares and presents other educational reports to Community and/or Community Leadership Team as appropriate.
  • Assists with purchase and disposition of capital assets.
  • Continually monitors ongoing financial activity of the organization for opportunities to recommend increases in income and/or decreases in costs. Makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Attends Pension Investment Committee meetings. Reviews quarterly performance reports before issue to Committee. Provides assistance to the human resources director as requested for implementation of the Pension Plan policies and procedures concerning retirees' benefits as called for in the Pension Plan.
  • Maintains membership in Region XI Conference of Religious Treasurers (CORT).
  • Attends monthly Leadership Council meetings. May also serve on other boards or councils.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.



  • Education and Training

  • Knowledge and Skills: Numerical ability is necessary to make mathematical calculations when compiling and auditing reports and accounts. Applicable computer skills are necessary. Analytical skills required for interpretation of reports. Good oral and written communication skills required.
  • Mental Application: Close attention to details and accuracy. Use of independent judgment following established guidelines/practices. Must be able to organize and plan details using own initiative. The ability to communicate clearly with people of various education levels and backgrounds is necessary.
  • Worker Characteristics: High degree of accuracy required in performing required tasks. Proof reading skills required. Requires good memory for detail and ability to concentrate on many things in a short span of time. Must remain calm in meeting work deadlines. Must be alert and flexible.
  • Physical Demands: Sits at desk most of day. Handles office equipment and supplies. Walks short distances. May stoop or bend to file. Works in clean, well-lighted office. Must be able to safely lift twenty-five pounds using good body mechanics.
  • Hazards and Risks: Some undesirable noise (i.e., printers). No serious hazards or risks. Moderate to high degree of tension. Subject to paper cuts and bruises.
