Job Description The position is for a senior Materials / Welding engineer in the Materials and Process group within Weapon Systems Lethality Engineering organization. The candidate shall have experience in joint design, weld layout and engineering drawings call-outs, and will work with other technical disciplines to identify and specify the appropriate materials, weld joints, processes, and finishes for weapon systems hardware design and fabrication . Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic or composite material and processing specifications, fabrication, joining and assembly processes that meet mechanical and life cycle requirements. Considers the environmental impact of materials during manufacture, processing and application. Develops, analyzes and applies welded material properties and design allowables, processing and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. Ensures technical outcomes are consistent with established engineering principles and practices and that customer and company technical, system, performance, and quality requirements are met. Other responsibilities include: Reviewing engineering drawings for appropriate materials, finishes and weld symbols. Performing failure analysis and directing laboratory technicians to perform metallurgical tests and analyses. Writing clear reports with conclusions, and recommendations. Researching new materials and processes for weapon systems design and fabrication. Writing weld materials and process specifications. Preparing cost estimates of production hardware involving weld fabrication Typical Education & Experience Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 4 years work experience or equivalent experience Required Skills and Education Required education: Bachelor Degree in Materials, Metallurgical or Welding Engineering with 5 years relevant experience, or Master-s degree with 2 years of experience. Preferred Skills and Education GMAW, GTAW and Arc welding experience. Ability to communicate effectively across engineering disciplines and locations across the US. Ability to work independently. Excellent customer service skills.
